CNC VERTICAL MILLING

What is CNC Vertical Milling?

CNC Vertical Machining is a machining method in which cutting tools perform various machining operations by moving vertically on a fixed workpiece on a computer controlled (CNC - Computer Numerical Control) machine. CNC vertical machining centres are generally used for precision machining of planar surfaces, holes, slots and complex geometries.

Advantages

  • High Precision: Provides micron-level accuracy.
  • Productivity: Reduced production time due to fast processing capability.
  • Versatility: Can process different materials and designs.
  • Repeatability: The same quality and size products are obtained in mass production.
  • Automation: A more reliable production process with less human intervention.

Features of CNC Vertical Machining Centres

  • Vertical Spindle: The cutting tool moves in the vertical axis (Z axis) and approaches the workpiece from above.
  • Multifunctional: It can perform operations such as milling, drilling, countersinking, threading, surface treatment.
  • Precision and Repeatability: Complex designs can be produced with high precision.
  • Automation: It can operate without human intervention, which speeds up the production process.
  • Flexible Programming: Various designs can be easily processed using G-code or CAD/CAM software.

CNC Vertical Machining Working Principle

  • Programming: The part is designed in a CAD/CAM software and a G-code programme is generated.
  • Material Positioning: The workpiece is firmly fixed to the machine table.
  • Cutting Tool Movements: Cutting tools process the material by moving in X, Y and Z axes.
  • Machining: Chips are removed from the material surface in accordance with the part design.

Areas of Use

  • Automotive Industry: Engine blocks, transmission parts, gears.
  • Aviation: Aircraft wings, engine components and structural parts.
  • Medical: Prosthetic parts, surgical instruments, implants.
  • Defence Industry: Weapon parts, radar components.
  • Electronics: Small metal components and connectors.
  • Machine Manufacturing: Mould and apparatus production.
  • Food and Packaging Industry: Stainless steel processing equipment.
